Course overview
The Highfield Level 3 Award in the Safe Use of Mechanical Restraints (Handcuffs) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals who may be required to use restraints as part of their role in the private security industry.
This course is aimed at SIA licence holders and others working in roles where managing non-compliant or potentially violent individuals may be necessary. It provides the knowledge and practical skills required to apply mechanical restraints safely, proportionately and within the law.
The use of restraints carries significant responsibility and is subject to legal scrutiny. This course ensures learners understand not only how to apply restraints, but when it is appropriate to do so, and the risks involved.
Delivered by experienced practitioners, the training combines legal knowledge with practical application, ensuring you are prepared to operate safely and professionally in real-world situations.
How lessons work
Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based learning and practical exercises. You will learn the legal principles behind the use of force before applying techniques in a controlled environment.
Practical sessions allow you to develop and demonstrate safe handcuffing techniques under supervision, ensuring you understand both the method and the risks involved. Assessment is typically carried out through practical demonstration and written or workbook-based evaluation.
Our instructors provide clear guidance throughout, focusing on safety, control and professional conduct at all times.
